Traditional vs Modern Medicines

Traditional Vs Modern medicines, which will fight off bacteria growth better. The purpose of this project is to determine whether traditional medicines or modern day medicine would be best to prevent the growth of bacteria.  Elders used these traditional medicines to fight sickness and this shows the effectiveness compared to modern day medicines. Though I have no doubt that the traditional  medicines work and have worked in the past to fight off infection. I believe that modern day medicines will work a lot better to fight off the bacteria. More studies have been done towards them and their purpose is solely to kill off infections.

Step 1- Prepare agar plates. (purchased online)

Step 2- Place a glass beaker on a hot plate with 150ml of water and let boil.

Step 3- Add a tablespoon of each medicine to separate beakers.Let boil for 15 minutes.

Step 4- Remove from heat and let cool.

Step 5- Using the eye dropper take a sample of each solution and place 5 drops into prepared petri dishes.

Step 6- Take sterile swabs and swab hockey gloves. (Using individual swabs)

Step 7- Rub swab onto a petri dish.

Step 8- Place covers on and put in a cool dark place for 4 days or until bacteria is visible.

Step 9- Analyze results.

Petri Dishes with Agar

Amoxicillin

Timer

Hockey gloves

As you can see the sample that grew the least amount of bacteria is the Amoxicillin. While Cedar, Chaga, and Muskrat root grew more bacteria then the control. With Cedar growing the most bacteria out of them all.

Muskrat root has a pain relieving effect and is used to fight off colds, upset stomach, and fevers. By taking a piece of muskrat root and chewing it. It is found in wetlands such as swamps and marshes.

Chaga Mushroom helps fight off illnesses, lower cholesterol, lowers stress. High cholesterol risks heart disease, therefore chaga mushroom can help fight off cardiovascular disease. Chaga grows on Birch trees throughout the northern hemisphere.

Cedar helps fight against diseases and clearing congestion. It is often used in sweatlodges to line the floor. Cedar is found on trees in cool moist climates.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Works within 2-3 days. Must be prescribed from a healthcare provider.

Though I have no doubt that the traditional  medicines work and have worked in the past to fight off infection. I believe that modern day medicines will work a lot better to fight off the bacteria. More studies have been done towards them and their purpose is solely to kill off infections.

In the future I would like to continue to study the effects of traditional medicines on bacterial growth. I would like to include more traditionall medicines and work with a mentor to count the bacterial growth as well as determine the type of bacteria growing.
