Pacemaker Safety Device with Real Time Magnetic Field Detection

CSEF · 2026 Electronics & Electromagnetics (Senior Division)

Overview

This project designed and built a handheld magnetic field detection device to provide early warning to pacemaker patients before dangerous magnetic fields reach their implanted device. The device uses an MLX90393 3-axis magnetometer connected to an Arduino UNO R4 WiFi microcontroller. A 2-tier alert system communicates danger level through an RGB LED and buzzer. The sensor was calibrated against a solenoid with known electromagnetic properties across a 0–17.5 mT range. Testing was conducted using refrigerator magnets, induction cooktops, power drills, and speakers. Calibration achieved an R² of 0.9846 with an uncertainty of ±0.035 mT at the mean testing point. Results confirmed that holding the device in hand provides measurable early warning before dangerous fields reach chest depth.
