Early Fire Risk Detector

CSEF · 2026 Electronics & Electromagnetics (Junior Division)

Overview

Wildfires are more likely under conditions of high temperature, low humidity, and dry soil. After a planter box at my home auto-combusted during extreme heat, I designed and built an early fire-risk detection system using a soil moisture sensor and a DHT22 temperature/humidity sensor connected to an ESP32 microcontroller. The system continuously monitors environmental conditions, triggers sound alerts and text notifications when predefined risk thresholds are exceeded, and logs data for analysis. The logged data is used to identify trends and provide guidance on changing fire-risk conditions. In controlled testing, the system successfully detected high-risk conditions and consistently triggered alerts across multiple trials. This project demonstrates a low-cost, real-time approach to proactive, pre-ignition fire-risk detection, helping enable earlier intervention compared to traditional reactive systems.
