Monitoring A Gas Stove

CSEF · 2026 Electronics & Electromagnetics (Junior Division)

Overview

Engineered a low-cost dual-layer gas safety system combining Arduino-based MQ-5 gas detection ("Digital Nose") with smartphone visual monitoring ("Digital Eyes") for elderly stove safety. The system continuously monitors gas levels, triggers immediate buzzer/LED alerts above 250 threshold, and enables remote verification of stove knobs via repurposed smartphone camera. Achieved 100% detection success across 15+ trials with zero false positives, validating Fick's Law inverse distance relationship. Next steps include ESP32-CAM integration for enhanced connectivity and real-world deployment.
