Fold For Flight

CSEF · 2026 Applied Mechanics (Junior Division)

Overview

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if the design affects the distance a paper airplane will travel. My hypothesis was that the plane folded with a longer body would fly farther. In this project there was 4 different types of designs, each made out of the same type of paper. I realized that if I were to throw the plane my strength would be different and it would affect the results. Therefore I made a launchpad to control each planes thrust or force. My results showed that my hypothesis was correct, if you fold a paper plane with a longer body it will fly the farthest with an average of 115.5 cm. The plane that flew the shortest was the plane with the shortest body with an average of 23.75. This experiment helped show how changes in design does impact flight distance.
