Does AI Have Personality?
CSEF · 2026 Behavioral & Social Sciences (Junior Division)
Overview
The future of artificial intelligence is full of overwhelming possibilities. As human technology progresses, the use of AI will become more and more integrated into our lives. According to a 2025 Pew Research Center Survey of 1,458 American teens, 68% between the ages of 15-17 years old and 57% of 13- to 14-year-old teens reported using AI chatbots, and three-in-ten teens interact with AI chatbots daily. If AI is expanding its reach, learning how to interact with LLMs will become important in the future. My research question is: how does artificial intelligence’s personality differ from that of humans and other AIs? To answer my question, I performed the following experiments on 8 large language models ( Grok 4, Deepseek, Meta AI, Copilot, ChatGPT 5.2, Pi, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini 3.0). #1: analysis of 60-question personality test (16personalties.com) #2: analysis of 4 prompted letters #3: analysis of 26 common interview-questions #4: analysis of 27 trolley problems and variants (neal.fun) From the data I gathered through my experiments, I was able to identify three key patterns: 1. Most LLMs displayed traits such as logic, rationality, organization, assertiveness, and open-mindedness. These traits, when compared to human personalities, are more “robotic” and “unemotional”. 2. Extraversion/introversion was the trait with the most variation among LLMs. LLMs like Meta, Grok, and Gemini displayed high extraversion while LLMs like Copilot leaned towards introversion. 3. Meta is a big outlier among the LLMs, displaying unusually high neuroticism, agreeableness, and irrationality. While some LLMs may be logical and efficient, other LLMs may be less rational and more feeling. In conclusion, my research helped to better understand the current leading LLMs, gaining valuable information on their personalities (the benefits and pitfalls). In the future, I want to explore creating more efficient and cooperative LLMs to benefit many workplaces and users.
