Overview

For my project, I tested if a handmade water filter could make dirty water clearer. I built a filter in a water bottle using cotton, sand, charcoal, and different sizes of rocks. Then I tested it using dirty water from two rivers and a marsh. After filtration, the water looked much clearer and the visible debris was removed. My project showed that a handmade filter can be a useful first step before boiling water in emergency or survival situations when clean water is hard to find. However, clear water does not always mean safe water, so further steps like boiling are still needed.
