Natural Filters
CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences (Junior Division)
Overview
Abstract My experiment helps people understand that you can filter water with resources from a mountain but it will not be clean enough to be drinkable. For my experiment I filtered dirty water with a filter made of substances found on a mountain, like sand, small rocks (gravel), charcoal, etc. A filter made of substances from a mountain can capture things in dirty water like dirt, grass, rocks, sand, etc. but it can’t capture germs and bacteria. Germs and bacteria would need to be killed with chemicals like chlorine to make the water drinkable. This means water is only around 90% clean.
