When Quality Speaks, People Listen

CSEF · 2026 Behavioral & Social Sciences (Junior Division)

Overview

Some microphones receive sounds differently than others. Condenser microphones, like the ones in laptops and computers, pick up more background noise. Dynamic microphones block out background noise, improving the overall sound quality. Hence, the researcher wanted to know if microphone quality affected the credibility of the video. They predicted that if the better quality microphone is used, then the credibility of the video will be better than the video filmed with the microphone of poorer quality, because when a better microphone is used, the viewers will have a better reaction to the video and give it more credibility. They created a survey for both students and parents to fill out and put data into two bar charts. They found that the data reflected their hypothesis: as most people who watched the video using the higher quality microphone agreed on a higher credibility rating than the video using the poorer quality microphone. They would like to continue their research by testing more qualities of a video, like the speaker’s attire, their tone and other aspects. They might also test microphones of a different price range.
