What DIY Material Is Best to Use for Soundproofing?
CSEF · 2026 Materials Science (Junior Division)
Overview
In my science fair project I figure out which DIY material is best to use for soundproofing. Some examples of materials I tested was a fiber rubber material (mousepads), cloth (some thick shirts), random plywood, and more. I also did many control tests so my data is consistent and also compared distances with each material to see how that affects results. I also briefly discuss the history of the decibel system, decibel readers, and soundproofing and manipulation as a whole. I also explain what sound is and common soundproofing methods in the professional industry. And last but not least how this is relevant today in the world.
