The Whole Climate: Assessing Student and Teacher Mental Wellness

Overview

The purpose of this study is to isolate the specific population of an all-girls, private, Catholic high school to determine the effects of school climate on mental wellbeing of teachers and students in the context of prior research. It is predicted that there is a correlation between mental wellbeing and school climate of teachers and students. Students and teachers will be surveyed on school climate, punishment techniques, subjective wellbeing, classroom engagement, and several other factors. It was found that students' increased Student Subjective Wellbeing Questionnaire scores trended slightly with increased Delaware School Climate Survey scores. It was found that both Teacher and Student perceptions of climate were lower than expected, and student wellbeing was measured lower on average than teachers. Statistical analysis approves these findings, so the null hypothesis is rejected. In conclusion, there is a correlation between mental wellbeing and perception of school climate for the catholic, all-female high school students and teachers. This may be as a result of the school's efforts to improve student outreach, or simply continual trends that agree with those found in previous research.
