The Upside Down in the Modern Day: The Changing Role of Father and Mother in Parenting World

Overview
Culture is related to parenting style. It shapes the way parents take care of their children. In Asia, they live in patrilineal descendant group. Father is leading role. In Indonesia, especially for Java ethnical, they live in patrilineal descendant group. This manufacturer prefers female to male labors because female labor is seen more resilient and obedient. The job vacancy for male is getting smaller so the opportunity for male to earn income is also narrowed. As a result, the changing role of mother and father happened. There were two problems in this research, namely (1). How was interviewees’ perception toward the changing role in Parenting Style? (2). What is the effect of the changing role in parenting style? The writers used social exchange theory as theoretical background. It is a theory associated with the work of George Homans and Peter Blau and built on the assumption that all human relationships are formed by the use of a subjective cost-benefit analysis. The research applied qualitative method with descriptive-analytical method supported by quantitative data. Data is collected from field and literature. Field observation is conducted by using in-depth interviews guided by structured interview. Based on the result of the research, interviewees disagreed with the changing role of father and mother because the natural role of woman is as the nurturer and first educator for their children. The effect of the changing role is parents applied permissive parenting style. It affects to children outcome. They tend to be selfish. Keywords: culture, changing role, parenting style, perception
