The Reality of Transgenic Corn
ISEF · 2016 Biomedical and Health Sciences
Overview
We decided to investigate about the transgenic crops to inquire how changes made by geneticists can have repercussions on society, leading to debates and divergent stances. The purpose of this project is to investigate the knowledge that students between 14 and 19 years old at DAU Secondary School in Colonia Valdense, A.U.I.C. Secondary School in Rosario and Barker rural school, in the year 2015, have about transgenic crops. Another purpose is to research if there are still producers of non- transgenic corn for their own consumption, knowing the reason for their election, on a radius of 12 kilometres around the city of Rosario. Finally, the aim is to inform people on this matter. The hypotheses on which this research was started were that, on the rural region near Rosario there are a few producers of non- genetically- modified corn for their own consumption, either because of economic convenience or lifestyle; and, on the other way, that most teenagers do not know the existence of transgenic crops. The first hypothesis was confirmed, as it was difficult to find producers of non- transgenic corn, and the ones who were located do it because of the expected reasons; the second hypothesis was not fully confirmed, and interest on this subject was noticed as students were not deeply informed about it. The techniques used during the development of this research were surveys, interviews, discourse comparison and DAS- ELISA practice test. The work has not been finished yet. Information on the subject and about the different stances has started to be spread.
