The Effects of Peppermint Extract and Ginger Juice Amalgamated Onto Non-competent E. coli B Cells

Overview

A goal of this experiment was to add to the limited studies on the connection between E.Coli and colon cancer, specifically, the E. Coli B 2 strain. This experiment used a harmless strain, E . Coli B, in hopes it could be applied to E.Coli B2. The experimental goal was to help find an effective solution of peppermint extract and ginger juice to kill the harmful strain, preventing colon cancer. This experiment was conducted by using the disc diffusion method, streaking on petri dishes and growing bacteria in an incubator using different concentrations of the peppermint extract and ginger juice solutions. The growth of E.Coli B around the treated discs was observed. If there was an inhibition zone, then the solution did work against the strain. If there was no inhibition zone, then the solution resistant to the strain. This study concluded that peppermint extract and ginger juice amalgamated little to no effect. The control had the biggest inhibition zone, however, that was the control. Out of all the concentrations, 40% had the highest effect, however, it was not significant. Implications of this study would be to determine if the same solutions have the same limited impact on E. Coli B2. An additional question is if using a different extraction method for peppermint oil would increase effectiveness. This can bring awareness to different approaches on the origin of colon cancer.
