Starbucks On Heartbeat
CSEF · 2026 Medicine & Physiology (Junior Division)
Overview
The purpose of my experiment is to determine the cardiovascular effects of caffeine on a living organism, specifically on the heart. I think that if I increase the amount of caffeine then the Daphnia's heartbeat will proportionately increase as well. To test this, I first measured a typical heartbeat of a Daphnia, and then I injected caffeine in the water where a Daphnia Magna would swim, and measured their heartbeat after they ingested said caffeine. With no caffeine, the Daphnia's average heartbeat was 480 BPM. With decaf coffee (4mg caffeine / 8oz water), 524.25 BPM was the average. Finally, with 155 mg caffeine / 32 oz water, the average Daphnia's BPM measured in at 568.2. The data did not reject my hypothesis, these findings can be used to make more effective cardiovascular plans, or more effective dietary plans, as well as safer coffee to drink, which will make the world a much better and healthier place.
