Overview

Throughout the past years, the number of people who suffer from sleep apnea has been increasing. One study estimates that by 2050 sleep apnea will affect nearly 77 million adults (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Expected to Affect Nearly 77 Million U.S. Adults by 2050, New Resmed Study Finds, 2019). Though sleep apnea has been a known condition, many people do not have access to treatment due to the high cost of medical equipment, such as the CPAP machine, costing around $500-$2000 excluding insurance (Turner, 2024). Without proper treatment, individuals are often left with medical issues like type 2 diabetes, cardiac arrest and in severe cases death, which is why our product is aimed to be a cost efficient and comfortable alternative device people can turn to. Our device is designed to assist people with sleep apnea. It monitors breathing patterns during sleep and alerts the user through vibrations when breathing slows or stops. Using an accelerometer sensor to track chest movements caused by breathing, it responds to any changes. Components are placed in a hard-case container followed by an adjustable band, designed to be worn on the chest. The device can connect with an app that sends an alarm if breathing stops and tracks the number of sleep apnea events, allowing users to monitor their sleep and progress. Overall, the project was successful in creating a functional, wearable, and affordable assistive device with future improvements focusing on software updates, and added features to further improve reliability and user experience.
