Social Media vs. Teen Girls

CSEF · 2026 Behavioral & Social Sciences (Junior Division)

Overview

This project looks at how social media might affect body image in teen girls. Social media is a huge part of daily life, and seeing all the posts, videos, and trends can make people compare themselves to others. Over three and a half months, I collected data on how much time participants spent on social media and how they answered questions about their body image. I also checked out research about social media and teen mental health. My results showed that more time on social media might be linked to lower body image scores. Girls who didn’t use social media much scored higher, while those who spent more time online often scored lower, though not always. This project shows that social media can influence how teens feel about themselves and encourages thinking about how we use these apps. My goal is to help raise awareness about social media habits and body image so teens can feel better about themselves.
