Beyond the Scrolls: Examining the Effects of Social Media and AI on the Mental Health of Adults

CSEF · 2026 Behavioral & Social Sciences (Senior Division)

Overview

In May 2023 the Surgeon General of USA issued a warning about the concerning effects of social media (SM) on youth and adult mental health. This project is aimed towards analyzing the effects of excessive exposure of social media on the mental health and well being of teens and adults within our community. The goal is to create social awareness against excessive SM exposure. We will analyze how social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., induce an addiction-like behavior, an increased fear of missing out (FOMO), and an increased urge to constantly post materials hoping to gain acceptance. Teens and adults may also be exposed to cyber bullying, decreased self-esteem, and a negative body image. On the other hand, social media had been a life saver during covid pandemic as millions of people were isolated in their own homes and were in contact with each other only through social media. Social media allows people to connect with likeminded people and allows them to keep in touch with family and friends around the globe. Therefore, we have generated a set of questionnaires to be filled out by human subjects to observe the different emotional responses and to see if there is a gender difference in how people feel after spending time on social media. We would also see study if there is a correlation between the average daily time spent on social media and overall positive or negative effects on mental health. In addition we will study if artificial intelligence (AI) is adding to this social media addiction.
