Saving Homes from Water
CSEF · 2026 Environmental Engineering (Junior Division)
Overview
Hi, my name is Rhian Welling-Farmer. I decided to do my science fair on saving homes from natural disasters involving water, like floods. I chose this idea because I was inspired by a documentary about Hurricane Katrina. During that hurricane, a barrier used to hold back water fell and resulted in water flooding the entire town. The effects were catastrophic. The flood caused many to suffer injuries, starvation, homelessness, and even death. The water even carried diseases, which caused even more panic and chaos. I wanted to come up with better ways to save people from natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. One way to do this is to help find a way to protect peoples' homes from flood damage. This is where my science project comes in. I would like to test different barriers to determine the strongest barriers to prevent flooding and help reduce damage caused by flood waters.
