Save Our Stuffies: Protecting Our Environment & Our Hearts with Chemistry!
CWSF · 2026 Environment & Climate Change Silver Medal
Overview
80% of stuffies (~500Million lbs) are discarded in landfills / year! Polyester-fibre stuffies=highly-consequential pollutants; their high surface area=more microplastics & toxins insidiously leaching into our environment: antimony, oligomers, & synthetic dyes. Stuffie-dense landfill air=36,000x more antimony than clean air. Environmental tragedies impact all life. 60% of stuffies are discarded for stains/hygiene; I wanted to extend their lifespans. My objective testing & refinement of a repurposed botanical extract using chemistry principles created a novel, proprietary formula & method that effectively protects, cleans, & conditions stuffies. Resultant tribology restores fibres to original fluffiness & encourages sustainable paradigms & reduces waste. > 95% households have stuffies & 70% of children sleep with ≥ 1, so I prioritized 100% non-toxic ingredients, addressing a fast-growing, $3Billion combined market: textile hygiene, aromatherapy & faux-fur protection. 30% of stuffies=discarded ≤ 5yrs. I’m trailblazing a movement - Forever-Heirloom Stuffies: Protecting our Environment & Hearts with Chemistry.
