PotBot- Your Personalized Watering Assistant
CSEF · 2026 Environmental Engineering (Track 2) (Junior Division)
Overview
For my project, I am creating a moisture detection device that I decided to name PotBot, that lets you know when your plant needs to be watered! Every year, 35% to 50% of houseplants die from overwatering or underwatering. This is because house plants solely rely on humans for their watering needs. If you over water your plant, it will soon die as the water may suffocate the roots of the plant, and if you under water, the plant wouldn’t get enough of the nutrients they need to survive. PotBot, which is my soil moisture detector for houseplants, senses when your plant needs water, and when the plant has enough water! In our house, we have many houseplants, most of which are very finicky about the amount of water they receive. PotBot sends a notification to your phone when your houseplant is ready to be watered. Every type of houseplant has different water needs. With PotBot, instead of over or under watering all your plants at the same time, you can give each plant exactly the amount of water it needs when it is ready. That helps keep your houseplants alive, and healthy! Some houseplants, like succulents, hardly need as much water as other houseplants, like ferns, which need a steady supply of water. I got this inspiration after multiple of my houseplants were slowly dying because I either under or over watered it. With PotBot, every houseplant will get as much water as they need, so they stay healthy and continue to beautify your home!
