Lotion in Motion
CSEF · 2026 Product Science (Junior Division)
Overview
Many people buy overpriced items when they do not know what is in them. An experiment was conducted to discover the difference between an expensive moisturizer and a cheaper one. The goal was to determine if people really need to spend an overuse of money on moisturizers that do not do what they are expected to. Sample moisturizers including: Clinique 100 hour Moisture, Bubble Slam Dunk, MAC Hyper-real, Drunk Elephant Polypeptide Cream, and Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cream were experimented on to investigate which was more effective. The experiment was conducted by creating a gelatin type skin, and weighing each container. Then, the same amount of moisturizers were added on each skin prototype. After weighing each container for a second time, the results of the amount of weight loss was recorded. After recording the results, the more effective moisturizer was determined by the amount of weight lost. The results showed that the moisturizer with the least amount of weight loss was the most moisturizing since it retained the most moisture. These findings found the hypothesis false, that an expensive moisturizer is not better than a cheaper one. From these results, it can be concluded that a moisturizer does not need to be very expensive, just have the right ingredients.
