Journey to Longevity

CSEF · 2026 Product Science (Junior Division)

Overview

Aging research has led scientists to study natural compounds that may affect living organisms. Resveratrol is a plant compound found in foods such as grapes and berries and is known for its antioxidant properties. This experiment tested how different concentrations of resveratrol affected the lifespan of fruit flies. Drosophila melanogaster were used because they have short lifespans and are commonly used in scientific studies. Drosophila melanogaster were divided into groups and given food with three different concentrations of resveratrol (30 mg/L, 15 mg/L, and 4 mg/L) including a control group with no resveratrol. All groups were kept under the same conditions to ensure accurate results. Three trials were conducted simultaneously. The flies were observed over a 14-day period, and the number of dead flies was recorded every two days. The results showed that resveratrol affected fruit fly lifespan based on the concentration used. The control group had a survival rate of 25%, while the 4 mg/L group showed a slight increase to 51.7% survival. As the concentration increased, survival continued to rise, with 66.7% survival at 15 mg/L and the highest survival rate of 78.3% at 30 mg/L. These findings support the hypothesis that increasing concentrations of resveratrol increase the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster, suggesting that resveratrol may influence aging in living organisms.
