Investigating the Synergistic Effect of Ivermectin and C-Phycocyanin on Human Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells

CSEF · 2026 Medicine & Physiology (Track 2) (Senior Division)

Overview

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly-aggressive cancer that is difficult to treat because it lacks estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2 protein that drive the majority of breast cancers. MDA-MB-31 cells are established as an aggressive cell line used to study the biology and treatment of TNBC. This project was intended to discover whether using ivermectin and C-Phycocyanin synergistically to target two different pathways in MDA-MB-231 cells can minimize the progression of TNBC. MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with different concentrations of ivermectin and C-Phycocyanin individually and synergistically, and a statistically significant synergistic effect (through a Bliss Independence Model) was observed between the compounds.
