Indigenism in Peru of the XX Century

Overview

This investigation is being carried out to study the Peruvian ideological movement that defends the political, social and cultural identity of the natives during the 20th century. It is aimed at analyzing the role of the Indigenous people in Peru, as well as the influence it has had on the development of the nation. In the development of our research we reviewed primary as well as secondary sources, which addresses the indigenous role during the twentieth century. The organization of our research consists of two chapters: El Primero: "Indigenismo en el siglo XX" (The First: “Indigenism in the XX Century), analyzes the way the indigenous was politically admitted by said society, and El Segundo: “Arte y Cultura: La base de una sociedad" (The Second: Art and Culture: Foundation of a nascent society), where the impact of Indigenism on civil society of the time is analyzed. The investigation concludes that Indigenism is presented as a manifestation of protest against the oppression of the Indian, consolidating a new movement, contrary to those who expressed their contempt for the indigenous. In the cultural aspect, its effects are evidenced in works of art that are admired throughout the whole world due to the beauty of the landscapes and the style used by the painters, which made them precursors of a new art. The revaluation of the Indigenism movement was an unfinished task. During the twentieth century, despite attempts, this was unsuccessful, but it would acquire higher levels of importance in Peru during the XXI Century. KEYWORDS: Indigenism, rights, vindication.
