Identification of Environmental Risk Factors Triggering Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Veterans
ISEF · 2023 Biomedical and Health Sciences
Overview
A systematic review of the research literature addressing risk factors for ALS was completed for the years 2011 to 2022. The strongest research articles were then reviewed for the highest possible risk factors for ALS. The investigator then determined the greatest risk factors for individuals with a history of work in the military and completed the study with a percentage rating of highest risk to lowest risk. The author is developing a website with a self-reporting survey for interested Veterans to utilize to determine their risk for ALS as a result of military duty. The long-range plan for this research is to make the website and content available to the Department of Defense, allowing veterans to begin the initial diagnosis process in order to understand how to prevent ALS by controlling the risk factors.
