Hockey Composite Stick Flex and Accuracy/Speed

CSEF · 2026 Physics & Astronomy (Junior Division)

Overview

The purpose of this experiment was to determine which hockey stick flex is most effective for improving shooting accuracy and speed in junior high hockey players. This investigation was conducted to help beginner players choose the best equipment without spending unnecessary money, since hockey gear can be expensive. In this experiment, three composite hockey sticks with different flex ratings (30, 40, and 50) were tested. The independent variable was the stick flex, while the dependent variables were shooting accuracy and puck speed. Each stick was used to take multiple shots under the same conditions to ensure fair testing. Accuracy was measured by how often the puck hit a target, and speed was measured using consistent observation methods. The results showed differences in both accuracy and speed depending on the stick flex. One flex level provided better control for accurate shots, while another produced faster shots. These findings suggest that the best stick flex for youth players depends on their strength and playing style. In conclusion, this experiment helped identify which hockey stick flex may be most effective for beginner players. It also provided a better understanding of how composite stick flex affects performance, helping young athletes make more informed equipment choices.
