Effect of Collagen Supplements and Red Light on Dugesia Tigrina Head Regeneration

AJAS · 2026

Overview

Collagen is a crucial structural protein that supports tissue repair, while red light has been shown to stimulate cellular regeneration and accelerate wound healing. This study aimed to investigate the effects of both collagen protein supplementation and red light exposure on the rate of planarian head blastema regeneration. It was hypothesized Planaria exposed to red light and collagen could affect the regeneration rate of their head blastema afterward due to enhanced cellular repair from the red light and possible structural support from collagen. The exposure conditions category for the ANOVA test conducted represented differences between the experimental groups, with a p-value of 0.0191 indicating a statistically significant difference (α = 0.05). This analysis suggests that the independent variables, red light exposure and collagen supplementation, had a significant effect on regeneration rates across groups. The results supported the hypothesis, showing that planaria exposed to red light and collagen regenerated their head blastema the fastest, followed by those exposed to collagen alone, then red light alone, and the slowest regeneration was observed in the control group. These findings may provide useful insights for tissue regeneration studies and applications in regenerative medicine.
