Effect of Albumin Supplementation on Planaria Head Regeneration

AJAS · 2026

Overview

The purpose of this study was to investigate how different concentrations of albumin supplementation affect planaria head regeneration. The research question this study answered was how exposure to varying albumin solutions 24 hours before amputation affected regeneration time. Five albumin-water concentrations were tested: 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%, with 30 planaria used across six trials per condition. Photoreceptor regeneration times were observed after planaria lived in albumin solutions for 24 hours. It was found that the 4% albumin solution reduced regeneration time. A one-way ANOVA test yielded a P-value of 0.000128, and independent T-tests comparing the control group to the 4 experimental groups found that lower concentrations of albumin did not exhibit the same effect as the 4% solution. Only the 4% group had a P-value less than the alpha level of 0.05 when compared to the control group. Additionally, these results suggested a concentration threshold, with the 1% group exhibiting a greater mean regeneration time than the control. These results contribute to the understanding of the effect of external factors such as nutritional supplements on tissue regeneration. Future studies could explore the upper limit of albumin supplementation before its effectiveness plateaus, furthering knowledge of planaria regeneration.
