Landfills and Methane as Alternative Energy: What a One Year Methane Analysis Tells Us About Methane Production Using a G.E.M. and Self Made Bioreactor?

CSEF · 2023 Earth & Environmental Sciences (Senior Division)

Overview

Today, there are 1,250 landfills in America, with 300 of those landfills in California. Out of the 300, only 56 are operating. Although only 56 of 300 landfills are operating, methane production continues to take place in the other 244 landfills. These 244 landfills that are known to be non-operating, still produce methane and can be a large producer for renewable energy. Can methane production in landfills be studied in a simulation (self-made bioreactor) over a period of 1 year? Sealed systems are assembled using 5-gallon buckets with components such as thermometers, leachate return valve, gas release valve, river rock, landscape fabric, and a leachate removal valve. In conclusion, the sealed systems are to be left and managed accordingly for gas measurements. As time increases, methanogenesis is positively affected producing constant methane levels. On average 45% per cubic foot is being produced year round.
