Pesky Pesticides

CSEF · 2023 Toxicology Honorable_mention Award

Overview

The reason we did this project was to see if the Carmel River had dangerous amounts of herbicides in it. Our research questions are: 1) Are pesticides detectable in the Carmel River? 2) Will pesticides in the Carmel River be deadly? We tested our hypothesis by testing samples of water taken from the Carmel River for Atrazine and Simazine (active ingredients in most commonly used herbicides). We also did a seed germination test using the same water samples and compared the results to a control test. Our findings were that there were no pesticides in the Carmel River. Also, some locations yielded higher seed germination results than others. These findings did not support our hypothesis. This means the Carmel River is significantly less polluted than we thought. While we are glad to learn that herbicides were not detectable in the river samples, we would like to do further testing to find out if recent rainfall impacted these results.
