Observing the Effects of Different Concentrations of CBD on Cancer in Drosophila Model

CSEF · 2023 Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology Fourth Award

Overview

Cancer is the second highest cause of death in the U.S. per year. Cannabidiol, CBD, is a phytocannabinoid found in the plant cannabis sativa and could have properties helping against cancer. The objective of this project is to discover the effect of different concentrations of CBD oil on cancer in fruit flies. The cancer was induced by exposure to UVB light. It was hypothesized that the 66% concentrated CBD oil would have the biggest lifespan. CBD interacts with the CB1 receptor. This leads to the creation and activation of TRIB3. TRIB3 created by CBD interaction leads to an increase in apoptosis and autophagy. The experimenter irradiated the fruit flies to create mutation based diseases and then fed their offsprings different strengths of CBD oil. To test the effectiveness of CBD as a cure against healthy and unhealthy fruit flies, they were subjected to a fasting lifespan test for twenty-four hours. 16% CBD was the most effective with an average of 20 hours survived, and five survived. Next effective was the 66% CBD. It had an average of 19.5 hours survived, and four survived. 33% was not effective at all as it was an outlier. The non irradiated, healthy fruit flies had an average of 20.75 and two survived. The irradiated fruit flies with no CBD survived for an average of 16.625 hours. None survived. The results show that a lower dosage of CBD can be effective not only against cancer but benefits health in general.
