Investigation of Lignocellulose Degradation in Pumpkin Compost
CSEF · 2023 Alternative Energy Honorable_mention Award
Overview
My project was to determine whether or not I could break down lignin (wood) using bacteria from my garden. Five bacterial strains were isolated from my garden and grown in a sterile lab. The bacterial samples were isolated and grown again. The bacteria were then placed in media with wood pellets or filter paper. After being incubated in media wood pellets and filter paper were filtered using a house vacuum system. The bacteria were also tested to see if it had any cellulosic activity. This was done while wood pellets and filter paper were being incubated. None of the bacteria had substantial results proving that they had cellulose activity. This was confirmed when neither wood pellets or filter paper had any substantial mass loss. My conclusion is that because bacteria strains had no cellulosic activity they could not break down lignin and my project's results were inconclusive based on the fact that I had bacteria with no cellulose degrading activity to begin with. If this project had shown positive results it could benefit bio fuel production efficiency.
