Burning Calories: How Much Energy Is Stored in Different Types of Food?
CSEF · 2026 Chemistry (Junior Division)
Overview
In this experiment, I tested how much chemical energy is available in different foods by measuring the heat released while the food items burned. The temperature change of the water was recorded and used to calculate the chemical energy in calories. The mass of each food sample was also measured to ensure that the results were accurate. The data showed that the cashews released the most energy, while the marshmallows released the least. These results helped show how a calorimeter can be used to find the calorie content of different food items.
