Biodegradable Plastic
CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences (Junior Division)
Overview
Our project investigated on how we can find a better replacement to synthetic plastics. Our reason for this was to better the environment and make our effort in helping the world. For this project, we created a bioplastic made out of different types of starches that consist of corn, potato, tapioca, and a mix of the three. To test this, tested their properties and looked for their thickness, water absorption percentage, flexibility, and the percentage of mass biodegraded in soil. In conclusion, the data showed that the physical properties were impacted by the different types of starches. The results showed that the mixed starches had the best results in the properties we looked for such as a high flexibility and the thinnest out of them all. This suggest that the mixed starches are the more suitable option for making biodegradable plastic
