Which Insulation is Best?

CSEF · 2026 Materials Science (Junior Division)

Overview

In this experiment, we examined four different insulators to see which one provides the best insulation for a model house. We installed these insulators in four miniature houses that we built ourselves. The insulators that we used are: Foam Board, Foam Spray, Fiberglass, and Cellulose. We measured the temperature in each house for ten days every morning, afternoon, and night. We compared the average temperature inside each house with the outside temperature. We found that Fiberglass is the best insulator in warmer climates as it keeps the interior of the house cooler, while the Foam Board is the best insulator in cooler climates as it keeps the temperature inside the house warmer.
