Water Powered Rockets
CYSF · 2025
Overview
We are going to see if we can make water powered rockets by pressurizing the water and releasing it.
Problem
We know that fuel powered rockets are bad for the environments, so why not use water powered rockets?
Method
We're going to build a bottle rocket out of a 2 liter plastic water bottle and attaching certain pieces to make it aerodynamic so it can soar through the air. We pressurize the water that we fill inside the bottle rocket with a bike pump and once it gets too pressurized, the rocket will go up. We will launch it a few times to make sure we get really accurate results.
Analysis
What we observed was that when the rocket launched, the path was not predictable, sometimes it would do flips and sometimes it would go straight up and deploy the parachute. The rocket mostly nosedived into the ground and that damaged the nose a bit. We noticed that the more water filled into the bottle, the farther or sometimes higher the rocket would go, this gave us a clue about why it was stopping at a very short height. Once we put water in so that it was halfway full, it started flying higher and faster too.
Conclusion
Water can be used to power rockets. We know that because when we tested the rocket, it went higher than we expected and also deployed the parachute. So if we did this on a bigger scale, it could possibly get to space, then the rocket could burn fuel so it would not burn our atmosphere. So all in all, we think that water powered rockets could be a possible alternative type of rocket in the future.
