The Effect of Temperature on Magnet Velocity

CSEF · 2026 Electronics & Electromagnetics (Junior Division)

Overview

Purpose: Does temperature effect the velocity of magnets? Hypothesis: Heating magnets will make them attract to each other slightly faster than magnets that are at a cooler temperature. Method: I boiled two magnets and froze other two magnets and left two magnets at room temperature. Then I kept the distance between the two magnets the same at 1.00” with all of the different temperatures I used and released them to see how fast or slow they attracted to each other. Results: extreme cold temperatures work better than magnets that are exposed to extreme hot temperatures. I learned that heated magnets take a lot longer to attract to each other than room temperature or cold magnets. Conclusion: Before I did my project, I made my hypothesis on my title which was the effect of temperature on magnet velocity. My hypothesis was the heat wouldn’t affect the velocity of the magnet too much and that the cold temperature would slow it down because it would freeze the particles in the magnets and slow it down. After research and finishing my project I found out that I was wrong.
