The Effect of Covid-19 on the Air Filtration Systems in the Train System

ISEF · 2021 Earth and Environmental Sciences

Overview

In order to gauge the response to the coronavirus in Boston, the air quality at several public transportation stations was measured before and during lockdown. Throughout the entire experiment, the same handheld air quality monitor was used to determine particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and formaldehyde in the vicinity. There was a significant increase of particulate matter in the air outside at the Park Street station, and a significant decrease of particulate matter inside at the State Street station. This data suggests that the right steps were taken at certain places in the large stations, but not at others.
