Study on Synthesis Material Containing Nano Magnetite Iron Oxide

ISEF · 2015 Energy: Sustainable Materials and Design

Overview

Environmental pollution by the oil spill effect is a serious problem in many places, its consequences affect not only to aquatic life but also to the whole ecosystem. Therefore, oil spill treatment has been intensively received attention. With increasing amount of oil production and consumption, chances that incident happens while transporting is also increased. In order to address the consequences of oil spill incident, we have carried out a study to synthesize a material that can absorb oil spills base on the polymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene and nano magnetite iron oxide. The material could completely remove oil from water and it does not decompose in water or oils. It could be desorbed by heat and could be reused for several times. We strongly believe that the polymerized material could be widely produced and could replace the current oil spill treatment method as the material is cheap and easily to retrieve with magnet.
