Smoking Mold: How Cigarette Smoke Affects Mold Growth on Bread

CSEF · 2008 Microbiology Fourth Award

Overview

Objectives/Goals I examined the effects of cigarette smoke exposure on the rate of mold growth on bread. My objective was to find out whether or not cigarette smoke halts natural growth processes in the body. Methods/Materials I created two smoking chambers and exposed eight pieces of wheat bread to either cigarette smoke or fresh air being blown in by an air mattress pump. Results At the end of my experiment my results showed that the pieces of bread that had been exposed to smoke had grown no mold or had any signs of mold but the pieces of bread that had been exposed to fresh air had grown mold at the expected pace. Conclusions/Discussion This supports my hypothesis completely, although I did not expect no mold to grow on the bread.
