SiO2 Nanocrystals in Adaptive Janus Colloidal Architectures: Uniform, Flexible Photonic Films for Advanced Applications

CSEF · 2026 Chemistry (Senior Division)

Overview

We present a novel and simplified approach for fabricating highly ordered two-dimensional (2D) monolayer photonic crystal arrays using a suspended colloidal film process. Although monolayer photonic crystals are seeing an increasing need in cutting-edge optoelectronic applications as interfaces and dielectrics, they struggle with maintaining stability, single layers, and uniformity within pathways that are easily synthesized. Building on prior demonstrations of soft Janus polymer crystal films formed at air–liquid interfaces, we extend this concept to rigid spherical silica nanoparticles. By spreading out uniformly packed layers of silica nanospheres, and assembling them within a soft polypyrrole shell at the air-liquid interface, we achieve well-organized monolayer SiO₂ photonic crystals with high uniformity. These nanoparticles can then be transferred onto a PDMS or silicon substrate, or continue to sit within their polypyrrole coatings. This method overcomes key challenges associated with conventional photonic crystal fabrication, including complexity, limited scalability, and consistency in producing defect-minimized monolayers. By precisely tuning the sizes, and by extension, the spaces between these thin films, we can accurately control the photonic bandgap and responses of the photonic crystal. the resulting structures provide a simple, precise, and adaptable platform for photonic crystals with huge potential applications in sensing, optical coatings, and flexible photonic devices.
