Sea Sponge: Production of a Sponge Through the Use of Endocarp of Coconut (Cocos nucifera) and Shrimp Gel (Farfantepenaeus Paulensis and F. brasiliensis) for the Retention of Pollutants in the Water

ISEF · 2024 Earth and Environmental Sciences

Overview

Oil exploration involves activities with a high polluting index that can harm the quality of water, soil, air, and, consequently, the quality of life of living beings. The world energy dependence on this industry causes great exposure to environmental disasters in the explored areas, so it is urgent to intensify research in search of a solution in this field. This project aims to identify and reduce the rates of oil spills in the marine environment, and to reduce the amount of organic waste improperly disposed of in the city of Tibau-RN. Therefore it was decided to produce a sponge with the purpose of retaining oils found in the sea, and simultaneously reuse coconut fiber and shrimp waste found in our coastal region.
