River Reveal

CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences (Junior Division)

Overview

The purpose of this project was to determine which site along the Sacramento River had the highest water quality. Understanding water quality is important for farmers because water is essential for crop production. It is also essential for the survival of animals, plants, and humans. In this study, water samples were collected from several locations along the Sacramento River, including Knights Landing, Colusa, Hamilton City, Anderson, and Lakehead. Distilled water was used as a control because it represents the cleanest possible sample. At each location, a jar of water was collected and analyzed using an at-home water quality testing kit to measure different parameters. Bacterial growth was tested using an at-home bacterial testing kit and observed over a 48-hour period. The results showed that Lakehead had the highest natural water quality, with the fewest parameters detected and the lowest bacterial growth after 48 hours, compared to the other sites.
