Purple Roots

CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences(Senior Division)

Overview

Our project goal is to find out how effective water hyacinth roots are at removing microplastics from the water. We hypothesize that water hyacinth will be effective at removing microplastics, and our research question is at what rate it will one single hyacinth do so. Our variables are gonna be water hyacinth, the sun, and water. Our constant is the water as the water will be the same in both jars. What we will be the manipulating is we will add the water hyacinth to one jar and none to the another which we are able to control. To first begin our experiment, we first monitored how the water hyacinth grew and what they looked like in their environment. We noticed they multiply very quickly. Once we had the jars with microplastic water, added the water hyacinth to one jar and started our experiment, we took day to day notes on what we noticed, and we especially tracked the pH levels of each jar. After all the data we collected throughout the experiment, we ought to conclude that water hyacinth is very effective at removing microplastics from water just as we anticipated, but it did it faster than what we had initially thought. In conclusion, we were able to collect data to show that water hyacinths are an effective way of getting microplastics out the water at a fast rate.
