Perceptual Learning Channel Predominance Among Young Students in a Public High School of Canovanas District of Puerto Rico
ISEF · 2018 Behavioral and Social Sciences
Overview
Gestalt movement was born in Germany under the authorship of researchers Wertheimer, Koffka and Köhler, during the first decades of the twentieth century. These researchers proposed that other psychological activities such as learning, memory, and thinking, depended on the proper function of perceptual organization process. Perception learning channels, determine the entry of information; secondly, it allows the formation of abstractions such as judgments, categorization, and conceptualization. The purpose of this research was to determine the perceptual learning channel predominance in young people between the ages of 14 to 18 years. Three perceptual learning channels were studied: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. This research leads to prove that visual is the predominant perceptual channel among young people. Furthermore, recognize that people can use all the perceptual learning channels, while others can only use one or at most two. To acquire the data to prove the hypothesis a questionnaire was designed based on Learning Styles Inventories. The sample consisted of 100 students between the ages of 14 to 18 years of a High School in Canóvanas School District, Puerto Rico. The sample was divided in 25 students of each grade, from ninth to twelve grade. After analyzing the questionnaire, it was determined that visual was the predominant perceptual learning channel. Forty-two percent of the students surveyed presented visual as their predominant perceptual channel. In future investigations, a larger sample could be surveyed and the results could be providing insights how young people learn, as a consequence improve academic performance.
