Panspermia
Overview
The origins of life on earth is one of the most important questions under investigation One theory, panspermia, suggests that the earliest life on the planet may have been extraterrestrial in nature - carried in meteors or asteroids. A two year investigation was conducted to investigate panspermia. A sample of ancient algae and two organisms known to exhibit cryptobiosis were launched on a sounding rocket and a high altitude balloon. This allowed for exposure to the harsh conditions of space. The organisms were retrieved and their growth and development analyzed. All the specimens remained viable, thus supporting the possibility of panspermia.
