Optimizing Materials for Dancewear

Overview

Optimizing Materials for Dancewear Remi Hurrey Iron Horse Middle School, San Ramon, CA, USA The purpose of this project is to find what materials work the best for dancewear. I am researching this because, as a dancer, I wanted to know what I should buy for classes and rehearsals. I know that dancers go though many leotards due to them stretching out or getting holes in them. I conducted three tests including durability, breathability, and stretch tests, which I felt are the most important characteristics for dancewear. I used 8 different types of fabric such as nylon, bamboo, rayon, polyester, and cotton. For the durability test I used sandpaper and Velcro on the fabrics to see how they responded. The breathability test was done by putting the fabric over glass cups and heating them in the oven. I then tested stretchability by pulling the fabric until I couldn’t anymore and measured before, during, and after. After reviewing the results of all my testing, I came to the conclusion that the two types of polyester performed the best overall. Many of the fabrics did well in different tests and showed different strengths and weaknesses. While many of the materials would work for dancewear, polyester based fabrics should be used for the best performance.
