On Base: An Engineering Project to Make Baseball More Accessible for Challenger League Players
CSEF · 2026 Applied Mechanics (Junior Division)
Overview
The purpose of this project was to design a ramp that helps Little League players who use wheeled adaptive devices like wheelchairs safely reach bases during games. Baseball fields are not accessible which can make it difficult for all players to play. This project focuses on creating a solution that promotes inclusion in sports. For this project, I researched how ramp slope affects safety and ease of movement. Using this research, I designed and built a ramp prototype with a slope that would allow wheeled devices to move smoothly onto a base without tipping or requiring excessive force. The ramp was tested for stability, ease of use, and safety. The results showed that a gradual slope made it easier and safer for wheeled devices to move onto the base. The final design successfully improved accessibility while maintaining stability. This project demonstrates how engineering can help solve problems and create more inclusive environments. In the future, I plan to continue testing different materials, surface textures, and manufacturing methods to further improve the feasibility of using this ramp design.
