Music to My Wheels

CSEF · 2026 Cognitive Science (Junior Division)

Overview

The purpose of this project is to find out if music is the best way for anyone trying to get into cycling, or in any kind of athletic activity, to improve their performance. My scientific question is, does music really affect a person's athletic performance in activities such as cycling? My hypothesis is, if music affects a person's athletic performance, then music improves their distance in the span of 4 minutes. In my procedure, contestants on a cycling bike are then given information on the trial. They rode for 4 minutes, I wrote down the total distance and asked how they felt. In my results, people listening to music had a farther distance in the span of 4 minutes compared to their distance without listening to music. I accepted my hypothesis, with the support of my research and results, which provedthat someone who listened to music rode a farther distance compared to their distance without listening to music.
